Auburn, IN Thunderbolt 1003 - Amazing Installation

Thu May 20, 2010 3:49 am

I was on my way to Auburn, IN (in the northeast corner of the state, north of Fort Wayne) last fall to visit a friend and fellow audio enthusiast. I missed the turn into his long driveway and ended up driving into Auburn before I could find a good place to turn around, and I happened upon this, standing at the entrance to an RV park:

It's the cleanest-looking Thunderbolt installation I've ever seen. The entire thing looks like it was made to last until World War III. The tower is steel, and the standpipe runs up through the center. The the conduit that runs to the siren tower is actually encased in the poured concrete pad. It also looks like the entire thing got a fresh coat of yellow paint. The town obviously plans to keep this thing going for a while.

Also, northern/central Indiana siren fans take note, Russiaville has a white square-horned Sentry siren. No photos yet.
Say NO to excessive siren testing - overtesting desensitizes the public.
Say NO to voice siren systems - multiple origins = unintelligible audio.

That looks like the same pole that the Thunderbolt at the Federal factory was on. What a find!

The only way that install could be any cleaner would be if the power came through underground conduit from the pole.

I've seen that one. They also have an STH/L-10 and I believe and SD-10...

I google mapped Russiaville. I found something that looks somewhat like it might be the Sentry but I can't tell for sure. Is this by chance it? If it is thats an odd place to mount the siren.

I've seen a picture of this one before, it's a SD-10.

You must be thinking of Center Point, Iowa. Is this the picture you remember seeing?

No, it's definitely a square-horned Sentry, painted white, and it's on top of the town's water tower. That's it on Google Maps. I've been meaning to photograph it but I've never had my camera with me when I've had occasion to drive through town.

I'm pretty sure the square horned sentry is mounted on a pole. I know it is located right in that area, near where they're building a new water tower, but I don't think it's mounted on top of that water tower... at least not any more.
