Whelen Hornet Test

Thu Mar 06, 2008 6:37 pm

Sorry for the delay. Youtube was down for the better part of the evening. The video pretty much explains itself. Tested in Alert the first Wednesday of every month @ 1:00PM.

Nice recording, good to finally see a Hornet.

Great recording! I didn't realize how small they are. Isn't it just a single 400-watt speaker/driver?

Yes. It's kind of an interesting design. Not very Whelen to put the driver at the front of the siren and then projecting the sound into the larger projector/deflector. It wasn't very loud.

Yeah, I noticed that about it. Doesn't seem like it would cover that large of an area though. Any idea on the dB output of it?

The Hornet outputs 118dB at 100'. Call me crazy, but I was actually thinking it'd sound different from a Vortex. *laughs* It sounds a lot quieter, for sure.

Do you know if the Hornet has voice capability?

It does not. It's essentially just a rotating OA4.

This siren definitely sounds like it would be much more effective than a Mod. I think I like it, even though it sounds like a lot of other Whelens.
