The tone that persists in you recording is more than likely reverb from a hill or some other structure that the sound can bounce off of.
Yeah, I initially had the same thought. But if this truly is an echo that I'm picking up, then I would expect the same phenomenon to show up during the spool-down (which didn't happen). But who knows...this siren is quite faint by time it gets to my house, so perhaps I'm too optimistic about my ability to analyze it properly. At any rate, thank you for weighing in on this one. I'll be happy to finally locate this thing, and then the mystery will be solved once and for all.

I found this siren at the Hope Township Fire Department in Midland County, Michigan.To me it appears to be a Federal Signal Model 5/7. However, I'd feel more comfortable with a second opinion.
I keep hearing this siren near my house, and I am unable to determine what it is or where it's coming from. It goes off at completely random times, usually about once every other day. I'm guessing that it's for some volunteer fire department in my town or a neighboring town, but I've been unable to confirm that. Today, I was fortunate enough to be outside when it went off, so I grabbed my phone and started recording the audio. When I analyze the recording, a few interesting things show up. First, this appears to be a single-tone siren that has a frequency of approximately 470 Hz. But when it spools down, I can see that the steady tone actually persists for a second or two in unison with the spool-down tone, which seems impossible to me. Please see the attached picture of my analysis. Does anybody know what kind of siren this might be? If I know the type, perhaps that will help me to find out where it's located and what it's used for.
Thanks for your help! I'm trying to research the Whelen 2X00, and I can't find that specific model name anywhere (even on Whelen's website). What would Whelen call that particular siren?

Could you possibly upload the audio?
The siren is very faint (that's why I'm having so much trouble finding it). So you can barely hear it in the recording, unless you crank the volume WAY up. It sounds like an electromechanical siren, maybe a Sentry?

No, it's single tone, so either a 3V8(H), 7V8(B) or 10V.
Cant tell if this is a Sterling or not any guesses guys?
Siren belongs to the Armstrong Co. Pa Station 20 Fire Department
That would be the siren from the Apollo #2 Fire Department just outside of Westmoreland County, here is a pic of it from the Siren Archive. Very interesting that it is an 8 port siren!
