ACA Hurricane wind-up

Sat Nov 24, 2007 8:09 pm

I realized something interesting. We all know that the wind-up of the Hurricane is very sudden. However, because it is a chopper-based siren, it still has to speed up. I'm assuming the chopper winds up like a normal siren, then the blower kicks in and gives it that jolt. If the siren was pointing directly at you, wouldn't you hear the chopper speed up before the blower kicks in? Or is it a different kind of motor?

Just wondered, after watching Archon's video...

The choppers seem to wind up fast, because if the choppers were to wind up slowly, there would not be much of a wind-up quality in the siren. The Hurricane has a one-phase motor for the choppers, so the choppers reach peak speed quickly.

Thanks for clearing that up. I wondered how the timing worked. However, in Attack mode, I believe the chopper stays on, and the blower shuts off, but because of the timing, the blower isn't off long enough for the chopper to steady out. Just a guess.

These are very interesting sirens!

The blower of the Hurricane packs a punch, and so the air is rushed up to the head FAST! The choppers do indeed turn off periodically in attack mode, but the blower turns off at every wind-down, probably to put some emphasis the signal a bit.

very interesting. Without the blower, would there be a way to maintain the same sound pitch and windup? I was thinking it is by itself, but if not, maybe the use of solenoids could perform that operation. The solenoids would stay closed until the windup was almost complete, then shoot open.

I wonder what the Single Toned Hurricane sounds like.

The same basic tonal and interval qualities would be achieved, just with less sound.
Solenoids would give a pulsed signal, which would sound cool but would not give a credible attack signal.
Man, I love that hi-lo signal Greg did with his own Hurricane!

Not if you keeped the solenoids synchronized with eachother. It definitely wouldn't work with attack though, only alert.

Whatveer happened to Gregg's Hurricane site? he had a site with pics and stuff. does anyone still have the link? Is he even at this board?

I only remember him making a few posts on this board.
Also, I'm, too, wondering as to what happened to his directory of pics and videos.
