CLM 10 Port Fire Department Siren?

Fri Jan 07, 2022 10:27 pm

Hi All,

I'm working on replacing / repairing a rural fire hall siren that is located in BC. From my research I think it's a CLM mailbox siren of an unknown model that has the 12 port rotor removed (leaving only the 10 port rotor), and a 3hp 220V single phase motor installed to drive it. The original windings have been cut out of the Lincoln motor... I'm not sure this is because it was wound for 3 phase and there is only single phase power available, or if they shorted.

The spinning rotor is a 15" diameter. The vein casting is 5 1/2" wide.

The siren became intermittent as the control logic relays started to fail, along with bearing failure in both the motor and the rotor assembly because of misalignment. I sent the motor in for repair, but the siren bearings are on the slow boat from china. The manager of the system, in millennial fashion, has said "can't we just replace it with something new"? I have no idea how many dB this siren is, which is part of the problem.

So my question is, is there a current siren, that will run off a single phase 3 hp contactor and circuit that will output the same volume as what I have here? This siren was fitted into a "doghouse" for lack of a better word, to shed rain and snow off it. Ideally the replacement unit would fit in the same area.

Thanks!

WOW! I believe that is the same siren that is in a famous siren recording, not the exact one but a very similar type! Any recordings of it in operation?

No, but given the cost of replacement I think I'm going to convince them to referb it and keep it going. And once I do that I'll record it. I have heard it and it's unbelievably loud.

A Model 5/7 rotor is about 18 inches in diameter and is 113dB @ 100 feet for the single tone version, so I'd put yours somewhere right around that. Sentry Siren sells one that might get you close to that original dB mark (only 109) but it uses a 4HP motor (Model 3V8-H). It's also a $3800 siren, plus whatever it would cost to cross the border. The best one to match what you have in terms of loudness would be the 7V8, but that's almost an extra $1k over the 3V8 and uses a 7.5 HP motor.

In terms of cost, your best bet would be to refurb the existing motor and use what you have.
Just because you're offended, doesn't mean you're right.

Another Idea would be if there are any fire halls that have sirens but aren't using their sirens you could ask for it and refurbish it and install it.
