Would be interesting to learn why that second sounding of the siren at "Oh dark early".
Don't understand why a lightning strike would cause that.
Is it the time it takes the batteries to recharge enough via power line to again operate the siren?

Nice find! I will have to watch KMBC tonight and see if they have anymore on it, and possibly a video.

Lightning can do some wierd stuff. It could have messed up the computer, but it also could have energized the contactors. If the siren didnt rotate, that would further explain it. Ive also heard of a 3T22 going off due to a power surge. I dont think anyone truly understands everything about electricity. Its just raw energy, its classified as both a form of light and a form of heat.

I'm assuming it's controlled by a PLC of some sort; a surge could have corrupted its ROM or just damaged its output(s.)

Not the best description, on the news' part, in my opinion.
If lightning hit the siren, there is no way that the motor would have been activated. There must have been either an indirect hit near the contactors or a radio-interference with a wireless activation antenna.

I don't understand why the siren stopped sounding, unless it was due to the batteries exhausting.
Then starting up again after the batteries recharged beyond a minimum level.
Or, if the motor became hot enough to open it's internal thermoswitches.
Then took several hours to cool enough for the thermoswitches to close.

Usually, sirens have a fifteen-minute cycle of continuous work, as stated by the major companies, so there could have been an automatic shut-off.
I don't think that a siren would automatically start up if the batteries are at a certain charge level, either, because then there would be less than an absolute chance of the siren completing a full cycle.

Heard that on Channel 5 this morning, was looking on their website for a news story about it, but nothing. :x
