New toys brought home this week: SD-10 & Model 5 chassis

Sat Oct 13, 2007 4:31 am

I thought I'd share these "before" photos of these two sirens that I got last week.... The Model 5 is the one I got on eBay last August from a seller in New Mexico. He kept it safe for me until I was able to grab it while Kay and I were on our way to Dallas from Los Angeles. Then on the way home, we went through Rio Vista, TX; the hometown of boardmember Texas Chad, and I bought this SD-10 from him. Great guy, and we also got to meet his little daughter. I could start a whole new post about how nice the people in Texas are, and Chad is a perfect example.

Anyway, we hauled the 2 sirens home, and with the help of one of the guys here at the ranch with our Kubota tractor, we easily unloaded the behemoths from the truck. The SD-10 suffered some sheet metal damage when I had to slam the brakes on in Tucson to avoid a jaywalker. I'm embarrassed and annoyed that this happened, but I honestly thought I had secured it properly. Luckily, the damage is totally fixable with not too much effort. Both sirens seem to be mechanically OK, so I will look forward to cleaning up both of them, doing body & paint on the SD-10, and hopefully locating a housing for the model 5. The SD-10 is a 220v 3 phase motor, and the Model 5 is a 220 single phase.

When I get into these 2 projects, I'll post more details and progress. I plan to sound ALL 3 of my sirens (these 2 plus the T-bolt,) all restored, on New Years Eve  . At least that's my goal for when to have these all done.

Nice!

I think I'll be in Los Angeles on New Years, but I don't think I'll be able to break away.

Have fun with your new toys :)

That's a low tone Model 5 too! I'm a little envious.

Stuffs mounted on poles like sirens or traffic lights are actually way bigger than they appear...

Not Bad lookin SD-10 ,better than the average L.A. City ones
and because it has the band in the center I suspect its a later
production run just like the only three I know with the band
,two in Gardena , Ca.
and one in East Long Beach.
Have fun, perhaps some day a
test of CD-1000 and SD-10 together at the ranch :)

OH yes! The first time I saw an SD-10 up close (at the Fort MacArthur Museum in San Pedro, CA,) I was amazed at the size. On the pole, they look maybe 2' tall and 3' diameter. Like something you could carry.
