In other words, the output transistors blew out (most likely by overheating).

If my geography serves me correct, your only just getting over summer?

Maybe the constant 35?C-40?C (95?F-104?F) heat started eroding these components? Hell if they weren't heat sunk properly, I wouldn't be surprised that such blow outs didn't happen sooner.

Its been alot hotter before and we have never had this problem. It was because Columbus Fire set the sirens off way too many times without a resting period.

These siren drivers use ferrofluid in their magnetic gap to enable high power handling. The heat from the driver is conducted through the oil-like fluid to the magnet top plate and pole piece. This works okay for a while, but eventually the steel parts of the motor structure become saturated with heat, and there isn't as much cooling happening.
Say NO to excessive siren testing - overtesting desensitizes the public.
Say NO to voice siren systems - multiple origins = unintelligible audio.

a speaker Needs a resting period? These sirens have controls. do they not have a computer program that runs them 3 mins on 7 mins off?? Im sure they did not stand there and just keep turning them on and off with the push of a button, It is Columbus not a rural town in the country somewhere..

The speaker did not overheat it was the amplifiers that overheated. Some of the drivers did blow but I think they were getting ready to blow anyway.

As Franklin County prepares to pay up to $150,000 to repair its toasted tornado-siren system, commissioners are asking for a broader, better plan to protect the pub....
