We installed a new 20V2T today out on Slaughter Rd. on the west side of Huntsville to replace the frozen up Thunderbeam:

Glad to hear that it's been installed. Guess it was more economical not to re-use the old pole? Though I suppose trying to mount it on the old one would've been a bit difficult.

I've always wondered, the majority of the older sirens in the system appear to be on metal tower structures. Was this more economical than the standard wooden utility pole at the time? I feel like metal towers would be more susceptible to lightning strikes.

It was believed at the time that the towers would last longer and probably easier to mount the control boxes and antennas on. Now, the weight of the Sentry's create a concern that the tower might not be strong enough to support them, so we have gone back to wooden poles. The last 3 that we put up were on class 2 55' wooden poles.

We had a brand new Sentry in the warehouse as a spare. When we determined that the thunderbeam would not be worthwhile to try to refurb, then we put the Sentry up. We have another 20V on order now to serve as a spare. We are also repairing a 2001 (probably SRN) that was struck by lightning and will have it as a spare too. Both of these are owned by Huntsville and would be spares for the city limits.

Is Madison still maintaining their own system? I remember hearing that they opted not to upgrade with the rest of the county but did it on their own (which is why their sirens are mostly on wooden poles). I know they also have a Model 2 in a park not far from a 2001-130 y'all put up over 10 years ago now.

Madison does pay for the maintenance of their own sirens with us monitoring them and activating them. The siren above is a Huntsville siren. Site H-56.

I have to wonder how the sirens around the county are numbered now, if the one on Slaughter road is Siren # H-56.

Do you plan on trying out one of sentry's new electronic sirens? If so I know a location that needs a siren
