Modufailures: Roswell and Gainesville

This was not my month for Modulators.

Last week was Georgia's Severe Weather Awareness Week. Our tornado drill was postponed from Wednesday to Friday due to actual tornadoes Wednesday morning...but that didn't stop Roswell from testing, and having a 2008 act up at that.

Come Friday, and it turned out Hall County was going to test with the rescheduled drill. So off I went to the Sardis area to revisit a 6048 that had failed to test once before...and soon discovered that maybe it was for the better.

As usual, you can find much details in the video descriptions. Enjoy!

(And watch out for an easter egg at the end of one of the videos...)

Never heard Morse on a mod before. I wonder when these last had a battery change...

I saw the easter egg & busted a gut laughing. As for the morse mod, I still can't think of what that would be used for, unless it was some kind of fail code that a siren was transmitting. Even that sounds unlikely.

It was Morse Code from the telementary saying the transmitter ID. Seemed to be the activation sequence for Roswell too. Some Whelen's blast out DTMF before sounding as well if that's any conselation.

Oh... Why would it broadcast that over the siren anyway?

For the same reason as DTMF playing out of a Whelen does I think.

For the "Morse Mod," sounds to me like the FSK tones, based on the 2001, are supposed to activate the sirens in alert. For whatever reason (be it the controller is misprogrammed or misinterpreted the command), it activated live voice instead, which just plays whatever comes over the radio. Hence the morse code.

The 6048 has dead batteries.
