Model A's as part of outdoor warning system?

Fri Jul 13, 2007 3:20 am

Has anybody seen a town install model a's or l's as a part of the warning system according to federal it can be done. The only place that I know of them being mounted is on a fire station street signal.

The towns of Juntura (Harney Co.) and Wolf Creek (Josephine Co.) in Oregon both have a similar setup -- three Model L (A?) sirens mounted to a round plate, an older version of the one in this video. It was probably designed for towns that were too small for a Model 2. I've never heard a Model D, but Ls and As are usually higher pitched and have a faster rise and fall than those in the video.

They look like model A's but they definitely aren't.

I've heard of a couple of setups with model D's in small downtown districts (like on a stoplight or side of a building). Those types of installations are rare, as Federal mainly marketed those as fire/general alarm sirens. Still, some D's made it into service as true civil defense sirens, although, I doubt there are any still serving this purpose today.

Mentone, Al Has a model A on top of the fire station and it's used for tornado warnings.

Oh yea, I forgot about this one. This is on a small fire station on an unincorporated exclave of Danville, VA. The district is very small, so I'm guessing this is their fire siren, since the other side of the station is a dead end dirt road and wood with a river not to far beyond that.
