Sirens in your neighborhood

Fri Jul 06, 2007 10:58 pm

I believe we had a topic like this on the old board, but i thought i would start it up on here. I think it is interesting to see what sirens other people hear when they go off. The sirens i hear when they are activated is
Model 5
2001 - 29th & Kansas
2001 37th & Topeka
Thunderbolt
Lately I'm not sure if the model 5 has been going off. I haven't heard it like i usually do. It used to be the first one to fire off. Here is 2 videos i made from my front porch during a test

And an actual warning (Walked outside just as they started fireing up. You can hear my neighbors and my mom, who had just woken up.)

We have a Model 5 which is operated by the City Council and sounds every day (except Sunday) at noon. This is the only purpose of this siren. A 2nd generation 2001 at the firehouse is used for fire alarms and tornado warnings. There was once a Sterling 2V8 on the roof of the news building (the original stand is still there) and a 2T22 (if I remember correctly) once stood in the city park; the pole is still sitting there, cut in half with tires around it.

Is the 2001 operated by the County? I seen on their website not all of the sirens are owned and operated by them.

I hear the Allertor (obviously), the other Allertor* about 3/4 mile away, and a 2001 (different town) which is about a mile from here.

*= There was actually a problem with the siren this past test
where it missed the CANCEL command for Attack mode, which caused
it to run several minutes when it should've ran for 15 seconds. It
then timed itself out. I reported it to authorities and the siren is fine,
and just encountered some RF Interference.

I have a video from thsi past test. maybe i'll upload it.

I can hear our 3T22, 2, and the sick 12 port 5 from my house. In fact the monthly test is in 5 hours, but I'll be at station 341 recording their 12 port 5. I really hope this one's working fine, I haven't heard a healthy one in about 10 years. I'll post the recording once the test is done.

Not far from my apartment complex is a Whelen WPS 4000 series electronic siren. The low tone it produces is pretty decent. Part of Franklin County's (Ohio) system, It is on West Case Road near the OSU Airport and farm.
Federal Signal Thunderbolt Series, still the King of Air Raid Sirens!

St. Clair Shores, MI (where I live) has five 2001s, installed in the mid 90s. I live about 1/8th mile from the southernmost one. Generally I can hear them, the 2001s in the Grosse Pointes, and the Thunderbolts in Harper Woods. Past that, I couldn't tell you.
