I found this today in my band classroom. All it says on it is "ALERT" on both sides with an amber strobe in the middle. Any ideas?

It looks like an EST Genesis ceiling mount amber colored remote strobe. Pretty cool nonetheless.

It actually doesn't look like an EST Genesis ceiling mount... Hard to tell though. Maybe an early one...

I'm not sure if they got a used one, but this unit was recently installed, as I had not seen this before.

It most definitely is. The exact model is GCWA-VMA.

Curious, does the school have an actual lockdown/intruder alert system or a tornado warning system? band rooms are usually so loud it is impossible to hear anything that comes over the intercom system, including the intruder alert/lockdown notifications.

That may be why one was installed there, as recently I found another of the same type in the lunchroom; both loud locations.

I went to a middle school that had a system of Simplex TrueAlerts on a Simplex 4100U. In the gym and cafeteria were the old '50s style Edwards Adaptahorns. They never failed to get our attention when we had a fire drill. They put the other alarms to shame.
