Federal , ACA, Wheelan Sheriffs Dog and Pony Show ?

Sun Jun 17, 2007 8:24 pm

Kabc channel 7 viewed a test of Tsunami Sirens , Modulators,
Friday Afternoon from the Marina Del Ray area of Los Angeles County .

Manufactors were invited to Show Off thir Voice Systems , Most
everyone interviewed from close to mile out said that the
voice was muffeled or garbeled , the Sirens sounded more like
giant Car Alarms from the Sounds they made . Sheriff personnel
said they wanted Homeland Security Funds and that Cost was
around 25 K per Siren !

Well lets hope the Sirens get the Bucks , I saw ACA, Federal ,
and I think Whealan's unless Sentury had a modulator their.

Anyone have any more information on this possible contract :?:

That's not surprising. A siren signal is essentially pure tones having a duration of more than a second or so, while a voice signal contains sibilants and transients which have a much shorter duration, but are essential for intelligibility. When most of the people served by the siren system are located at unequal distances from multiple siren sites playing the same voice message (provided the multiple sites are even synchronized), it's a recipe for unintelligible warning messages. This is perhaps the greatest argument for using siren warning tones instead of voice warning.
Say NO to excessive siren testing - overtesting desensitizes the public.
Say NO to voice siren systems - multiple origins = unintelligible audio.
