Dashwood, ON siren (Canadian Carter or CLM?)

Thu Dec 03, 2015 2:48 am

Didn't sound like I thought it would. Any ideas what it is? I had to turn the video volume way down the siren was just behind that house.

50 HZ in Canada? Or maybe that could be the one with the repulsion motor posted on here not too long ago?

This one. At least it appears as though it is a repulsion motor because I think I see a brush holder in the vent hole.

There are no 50 Hz. supplies in the Americas except in Argentina, parts of Chile and Brazil, and a few isolated areas. My guess is that there's an issue with the motor or the three phase. This sounds exactly like a siren I heard in New Zealand, with that turbine-like sound before the siren started to make noise, and a "thin" tone compared with other sirens.

If you listen closely, it sounds like a siren recording played through speakers. I think that this is a case of stolen audio.
I love Yamaha Music Sirens.

Perhaps it's under-powered or just a case of it being really old and broken. It didn't sound right in person either. Hoping Siren_Dude can shine some light on the history of CLM's.

This siren has a repulsion induction or universal motor driving it. It has a speedy startup to and that gradually slows as the siren hits top speed like a 2T22B instead of one that winds straight up to speed in a linear fashion like a single or 3 phase induction motor. A lot of repulsion motor driven sirens run at a slower, sometimes faster, speed than their 3 phase counterparts since the speed isn't "locked in" to a range from the frequency of the AC.

I'm certain this video is authentic. It is the only one I've heard with that startup "whoosh," except for the one I heard in person and this video: http://youtu.be/V6h-kmhVulk
