Old Chicago Fire Station Sirens

Mon Jun 01, 2015 1:29 am

So I stumbled upon afew old pictures of old chicago Fire stations, and noticed that there were quite afew thunderbolts and a model 5 installed on the stations, So I was wondering. Were these sirens used for the city siren system installed on Fire station sence they made for good coverage, or were they also used as fire sirens? (Note: There is a single picture below of one, but if you want to see the rest including the model 5, go to: http://www.illinoisfiretrucks.com/CHICA ... -STATIONS/

The city of Chicago had a system of mostly STL-10s and Model 5s with about 20 Thunderbolt 1000 sirens. These were all roof mounted and used as air raid sirens. The old system was shut off in the late 80s.

They were on a lot of buildings. Yes, a lot of fire stations had them, but so did a lot of public schools and even private businesses had them. Enterprise oil was a company that had a tbolt, it had been removed though. There is also a tbolt on a company around Pulaski and Wrightwood. It was there as of 3 years ago.

mod edit: added hyperlink to Google Maps view of siren in OP.

Someone should make a map of the old system.
