Creve Coeur, IL Thunderbolt siren. Pics included

Thu Nov 27, 2014 6:03 pm

I found this siren's location from a Wikipedia article. I live fairly close to this siren. (when I say fairly close, I mean a whole city over.) https://www.google.com/maps/@40.6461086 ... 4V7wpg!2e0 I also have some photos that I took myself, I can add them, if anyone wants them.

That reminds me a lot of the tower mounted Thunderbolt in Silverstreet, South Carolina.

It appears there is a Whelen across the street, so it could be inactive.
Where is this, by the way?

The siren address is unavailable. This siren is inactive, at least it looks inactive, but I'm pretty sure it is, because the shut-off switch is in the off position. I know the city knows about it, because the had some stuff hanging on the panels, and the next time I went back, the stuff was gone. Again, I have some photos on hand, and I would be happy to post them.

Why would they waste the money and put a Whelen across from it, when there is a perfectly good siren (Thunderbolt) there? (a little rust never hurt nothing!!!!)

Because the whelen has battery backup and voice capabilities. We don't know if that siren is operable. It may look good on the outside but the thing could be completely unusable.

This is true, but, still, I'm sure now it doesn't work because it probably hasn't been tested, but all of the RCM panels are there, but it is enclosed in a fence that is topped with barbed wire, and it is next to a pump house, so I'm sure it is pretty secure. Either way, I would love to go in and have a look at it, but I'm sure they wouldn't let me. Also, does anyone know what the rectangular, yellow box on top is ? (I'm talking about the one next to the rusted switch.)

That box on top is either a timer, a radio, a radio/timer or a phone relay depending on activation methods. Your bottom boxes are the RCM1 and RCM3.

That is without a doubt an activation receiver depending on method and a timer.
Own and love a Thunderbolt 1000 and a Model 5.

I have many hobbies and interests. And I love them all.
