1 less siren in Los Angeles city system

Thu May 03, 2007 7:31 am

Another 500AT disappeared today in Los Angeles  ...

I mentioned this one in a past post; it was the one at the corner of Corbin Ave and Vanowen St. in Canoga Park. I knew it was in jeopardy because it was only about 3 feet from a balcony on a new multi-million dollar condo complex. Today I went by there, and no siren. Very disappointed, but not surprised. I wonder who got it or where it was scrapped?

Yes, that's a real 500-lb Federal SD-10 I'm holding (braggart!)

KX, can't you get any of these before they are scrapped?
Is there anyone you can ask?
Sad.

Unfortunately, by that time it is probably destroyed.

The siren may not be destroyed yet, depending on when the junkyard actually takes it for material.

NO, you go down to that multi million complex,I'm sure that there is some kind of property manager on duty and inquire about which contractor they hired to come out and remove that siren.Or maybe theres a construction trailer still on site.Usually its the contractor involved with the construction of the complex or they hired a demolition contractor to remove the siren. I'm sure the city won't touch it.Chances are the siren ,the pole that it sat on & the old phone relay box are sitting on some demolition contractors lot awaiting disposition. Some of these contractors will sell you the siren cheap to help recoup any more money for their time spent removing the device.Thats how I scored the sd10, only this particular contractor was smart enuff to list it on the old ars board for sale section before it went bye bye. I had to drive alittle to get it but it was worth it.That was back during Californias last heat wave.115 degrees in the shade WHEW!
Remember nothing ventured nothing gained.

If they plan to make scrap metal of it, they will likely drop it to the ground or otherwise not handle it with any care.
But I would still look. The motor/rotor/stator may be OK.
I'd be happy to just have a rotor stator on a motor shaft.
Then I could try my underwater experiment.

Those are assumptions, you can't draw any conclusions until after you go investigate and all leads are dead. You never know. The siren might be in better shape than you think.....

SIREN removal dept. ?

Fri May 04, 2007 4:31 am

L.A. City General Services Dept . does remove some C. D. sirens .Sometime in the mid 1990's the SD-10 at 24 th & Walker was dissmanteled . They did Cut off , TORCH, the SD-10 from the pole & the pole was cut up , as far as I know it made the Front Page of the San Pedro News Pilot , what a title as I remember " San Pedro Air Raid Siren UNPLUGGED " of course you and I know they still have about 3 others , in the san Pedro area.
Interested partys should , have a headache of fun trying to
run the course of L.A. Local government , perhaps a city Yard in the Valley ? Sun Valley is great for Scrap metal & other Surplus

Hay anyone have a video of ABC world news from Tues. night :?: plenty
of Video of SD-10 by the Mc Carther Park east lake side . Now we have
to have a Stupid Law Suit and big investigation
over Tues. Civil Unrest because they could
not evacuate the park , Keep a live Connected SD-10 and kick it
on watch citizens and non citizens disperse !
