How NOT to install a T135 (as in Allens old T135s)

Sun Apr 22, 2007 3:54 am

Last time I saw the T135 in Lindsay TX (Yes the T135s that used to be here in Allen)
the pole was loose and being held up by a crane.
While coming back from the Thunderbolt hookup session in Moss Lake today
I stopped by Lindsay to see what happened with the T135. While we were working
on the T-bolt the Moss Lake VFD fire chief told me that IT FELL OVER. I just said "REALLY? NO WAY!"
He said that the guy with the
crane needed his crane back and that the siren fell over. I don't know if it
fell over right when they unhooked the crane or later on. Anyway here are
some pics of what I saw today.

Image
Here is the footing for pole. They didn't even put long enough bolts in it
to go down into the ground. You can't see it in the photo but the footing
down in the ground has some crappy re-bar. It looks like 3/8 and there are
only 4 bars in the thing. It literally broke the top part of the thing off and
pulled the re-bar right out of the top of the pole footing. Gee. If you were
putting up a T135 wouldn't it be a good idea to use bolts that went about
4 or 5 feet down or maybe further into the footing???? Duh

Image
Here are the T135s now. Both are knocked over on their sides just laying
there. The one has a damaged horn but it doesn't look that bad from what
I could see. I assume that's the one that fell.

Image
Here's a close-up of the horn. It's not that badly damaged. It might be worse
on the bottom but I couldn't get over there to see it.

Image
Here's the pole. It's been torched into 3 pieces. I don't know what's going
to happen with the sirens. I guess they are just going to let them rot. The
whole scene was just ridiculous.

Image
Here's the top of the pole. The thing was completely folded over and cut
off with a torch. What a joke. Stuff like this really ticks me off. To see
a botched installation of a huge siren like a T135 resulting in the thing falling
over is really a bummer. :(

Sad they allow such Bozo's to do such things.
What incompetence.
Is the T-135 salvageable?
Do they have any idea of the value of such a siren?
(I don't.) What is it?

Looks exactly the same as when I was there back in July.

Ouch.
The supporting pole doesn't even look like it would stand up to that sort of weight overhead!

Any chance of rescuing them? Keep one for the museum, and donate the undamaged one to a township that needs a system, this time with the proper installation procedures.
But I figure it probably isn't as easy as that. Unfortunately.

That's the same pole one of those sirens was mounted on here in Allen. One of those sirens stood on that very pole for almost 10 years in Allen with no problems.
Is the T-135 salvageable?
They never installed the other one so it should be as good as it was when
it was moved there from here.
Do they have any idea of the value of such a siren?
I believe that town paid $600 for both of those sirens in the auction.
So that's the whopping price of $300 each. They could probably be
had for next to nothing now.

Yes the problems were not the pole, it was (as said before) the way they installed the pole. If it had been made "stronger" it may would have been able to sustain the alleged 60 mph wind that brought her down.

OK here is what I don't understand...

OK, Lindsay is in the middle of urban areas, I mean you have Dallas-Ft. Worth to the south as well as Denton, Oklahoma City to the north, and Sherman (a good sized town) to the east. You can't tell me that they couldn't have called and rented the same kind of crane and held up the thing! Obviously they care nothing about them...

I am very pissed at the Lindsay VFD right now about this matter.

I literally fell out of bed!! (gotta love laptop computers).

Words cannot even describe what I'm thinking about the stupid idiots
that "installed" that siren. If they obviously don't care about the siren,
they shouldn't even have it. Those bolts on that pole mounting thing
could probably barely hold a Model 5!!! i can't believe they just let
those things lay there. What really pisses me off is that they torched
the pole in half, like they are just giving up. Such spoiled brats.

Those sirens should be given to a more deserving community.

*wonders how loud of a boom the T-135 made when it crashed to the ground*

I feel sorry for those two sirens. Sometimes, some people should have their permits of work taken away.
