Mobil Directo, Milwaukee WI Statewide Drill

Sun Apr 21, 2013 1:54 am

Video I got of the Mobil Directo on the North side of town for the Statewide Drill. This thing sounds lovely in person!

What an excellent recording. That thing must be absolutely ancient! Not only is it single tone (which I believe it has been established means it was converted from gas; the motor sure doesn't look original), but notice the turntable. The turntable is completely different from every other turntable we have seen on a Mobil-Directo.

Great find!

Nice Video. So that MD was part of the old system originally?

Also, speaking of Gas MD's, is there any operational one's today?

There are none that are known to be running. There are a few that still exist, like in Culver City, CA.

I can't say for certain whether this was part of the original Milwaukee siren system, but it seems to have been around for quite awhile. A friend of mine, now in his early 30's grew up very close to this location. He confirmed this siren has been there as far back as he can remember. So with that information, it can be assumed to have originally been a Gas MD in Milwaukee's old system, but was rebuilt with an electric motor at least 25 years ago. I'm very happy to hear and see it working so well after all those years.

There was an old thread on here of someone who rescued a gas Mobil Directo right before it was sent to the scrap pile. I wonder what became of that siren?
What happened when Napoleon went to Mt. Olive? Popeye got pissed.

Nice video John! I see that the weather held out for you too, but not the wind. I ran into the same thing at Whitnall Park. Hope to see more of your vids this season! ;)
