Sadly, where I was when I saw it, there is a very small chance it still runs. However, I have not checked. This is awesome! A jailbar! What type, 1000 or 1000t? It doesn't have the solenoids. If it doesn't run, it would be cool to pick it up. By the way, what part of NY do you live in?

Also, if I find out if it still runs, I'll try to meet up with you to record it, but I have a feeling it is only a matter of time before the building collapses or the thunderbolt is taken down

Check under the numbers to the left of my posts, I have my town listed right there.

I'd say, take a picture and come back a year later to see if its pointing in a different direction. Either that, or just call someone and ask. I recommend the latter. It's also most likely a 1000.

Year as in a pun or year as in a full 365 days? If it is the second, I'd check in a month at most

I don't know, monthly tests aren't really needed in a state like ours and there's really no other reasons for that go go off. Schenectady had a huge Civil Defense system back during the Cold War; I bet there are even old shelters sitting there, rotting as they are overlooked and forgotten about. These sirens are probably just remnants that aren't used anymore. How I'd love to own one of those pieces of history!

I am pretty sure it is non-active, when I drove by 7 or so years ago it was pointing in the same direction as it is in the Streetview. It was most likely an air raid siren and since the Cold War has ended is now resting peacefully and keeping watch over McDonalds LOL.

It's kinda sad to know that thing's been sitting there and rotting for over 20 years, along with the rest of the sirens in the city. I wonder if anyone has even approached the city about them yet?

Hey Schenectadycountysirens, did you know about the diaphone on top of the Rensselaer train station? It happened to go off right while I just got off a train and was getting ready to drive home.

Older sirens are painted black because the owner decided to put black paint on them. :D
