Vehicle siren switch-over

Fri Feb 23, 2007 2:18 am

I was wondering if some of the larger car/truck siren's are loud as a model 2? The siren i saw a few weeks ago was very big, and seemed to be bigger than a model 2's guts. Would I be able to make a custom housing and stand for a car siren and run it off a light switch? Model 2's are not big, so does their loudness come from the 2 horsepower motor spinning at a very high RPM? (meaning the bigger the motor, the faster the rotor spins, making a louder siren)?

I don't think that any known vehicle-siren would be able to beat a Model 2 in its sound pressure at a hundred feet away from itself, though most could come pretty close.

Well, the fire chief said that he may have a few sirens somewhere, and i was thinking of making one of them into a air raid look-alike to hold me over untill i can get a real one.

Neat idea, Head.
I have wanted to get some kind of siren and remove the protective ribs spanning the ports and make it somewhat resemble a big siren.
For example, place a stripped down Q on it's motor with rotor intake up
and build a rocket shaped housing around it to emulate a FS Model 2.

That was what i was thinking, but what are those little metal strands for? looks, or do they have a real purpose? I want to keep the sirens i get as original as possible, but that is still something i have been thinking about.

I assume those ribs are to keep out fingers of idiots like me who would molest sirens to see and feel how they're made.
I bet the sirens would be even slightly louder if those ribs were removed.
I like the British sirens I have seen on ***(I've been asked not to use this word before so there is now an automatic replacement censor)*** because they are so naked and basic.
