Has anyone read this new Siren Book yet?

Tue Jun 12, 2012 4:20 am

I just happen to be shopping on Amazon and saw this book recommended to me which from what I can tell its fairly new.

Has anyone read it and if so is it another publication knocking sirens?

I have NOT read the book. From what I can tell based on the reviews is that it is a criticism of the emergency management in Joplin, not sirens themselves. The sirens, according to a reviewer (who read the book) claimed that the author said that the sirens did sound two times before the tornado, 25 minutes apart.

I'll definitely pick up a copy and check it out.

There are several reports about that tornado that say the sirens did indeed sound twice. The problem was that many people ignored them the first time, and there was even some confusion as to why they were sounding the second time.

Here's one of the many articles about the situation: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44596753/ns ... 9defaawUo4

What system of sirens did Joplin have? I may just be seeing things, but does this look like a destroyed Whelen dangling from a pole in picture 14?

I'm pretty positive that Joplin had, and still has, a system of 2001's.

Joplin had a few older FS sirens as well. I think someone found a video of a tornado that hit near Joplin 2-3 years ago with an SD-10 and either an STH-10 or an RSH-10 going off in the background.

At the time the tornado struck, Joplin had a system of mostly 2001s and an RSH10 or two lingering. One is at a MSSU and was captured winding down from the first warning cycle in this video...

The other was located directly across the street from where the famous Fastrip freezer tornado video was taken.

Joplin also operates a couple 2001s in Airport Drive and a T-135 just south of Webb City.

Jasper County has been installing Sentry 16V1T-Bs including one on the east side of Duenweg heard in this video...
