Both my junior high and my first high school had a small pre-alarm bell that sounded for several seconds before the main alarm sounded, which consisted of repeating horn blasts. If you were near the control system or the remote annunciator panel in the teachers' lounge, you would hear it. The systems were from the 1950's.
