Manitou Springs just recently replaced their 550AT with an ASC E-Class The article should explain it. It is in the same location and on the same pole the 550AT was on.

I'd hardly consider an e-class "a better version" of a siren than a 550, though I guess anything is better than a broken siren. Still, you'd think they could have at least gotten an iForce or Mod for $25k.

I do love how the reporter seems to have been expecting the siren to be much louder than it really was.

They claim the 550 failed during a test. I emailed with the chief of police for Manitou Springs a while back and they said they disconnected it a couple years ago and didn't plan on reconnecting it. It had no power back when I was there last June, so it probably never had any power when they tried to test it. So instead of running power to it, they got a new "siren".

This is coming from a city that swore on GEOCAST, a reverse 911 system, which happened to fail when they needed it during the Waldo Canyon fire.

The 550AT is indeed MUCH louder in person than some electronic siren, even if they produced the same tone.

I've stood under the one in Calhan when it was going off in 2009 and it's assault on you is something to be respected... Even with -30dB noise-reduction rated earplugs! At my former home, which laid 500 feet away, the ground shook (just enough to feel when outdoors) upon wind-down.

Acoustic power from a mechanical or explosive source is much more powerful... The gunshot played over a stereo will never "be the same" as the one ringing out a few feet away.

Bumping an old thread here, but I have some news. The 550 in Yonkers on the school was removed in the last few years according to Google. AFAIK, the remaining units are:

Yonkers, NY - 1 unit
Calhan, CO - 1 unit
Sugar City, CO - 1 unit
Storey Co., NV - 2 units

Wow Storey County has 2? I thought the only one was on top of the Lockwood fire station!

Where is the last remaining unit in Yonkers?
