There is a video too which features a Tbolt 1000 with a hiccup...anywho apparently they are getting all new controls...not sure if they are getting new sirens since they didn't exactly state that, but add Sedgwick County, KS to the list of major cities/counties updating their systems.

"The Sedgwick County Commission approved a plan to upgrade the 153 sirens in the county. The total cost will be $1.25 million. Emergency management says if it isn't done, our sirens won't work as of January 2013 because the FCC will be sending its signal digitally." ?

As the saying goes if it isn't broken don't fix it. I just don't understand how a new radio controls can't be made compadible to operate older sirens.

That breaks down to about $8,170 per siren. I can't imagine that Wichita plans to actually replace every siren, most likely just the controls.

I'm actually somewhat surprised that the polygon siren activation system hasn't been installed in Wichita already. The original company that developed that system (Weatherdata) is based in Wichita and they also did Andover's system of 6 2001s.

On a side note, I know for a fact that Andover's Thunderbolt siren at Central Ave. and Lioba Dr. is no longer active in their system.

Starting in 2013, all signals must be Digital and not Analog or something...per FCC Mandate. That is one of the main reasons Shawnee County upgraded their system. Jefferson County, KS is upgrading the controls on their system of Banshees, Model 5s and other sirens. I think Leavenworth County, KS upgraded the controls on all of their Thunderbolts too.
