Any decent quality recording device should be able to handle the sound pressure provided your far away enough so it doesn't completely overwhelm the microphone.

You could always purchase an external microphone with one of those foam sleeves over it to help reduce the distortion, but distance is usually the best way to combat a crap recording.

I asked a friend from the area (lyon mountain) what they had for a siren before, and he said it looked like a big circle. I had him draw it, and I was stumped with his drawing. The siren must hav ebeen a omni-directional, but not a Federal Mod series siren. I figure a STX? The Department was built in '58 if anybody has a idea of the siren...
