Unusual AF timer; Older?

Tue Oct 16, 2007 5:37 am

I got this empty AF timer housing last week from eBay, and I gave it a good cleaning. It's a different design from any that I've seen, so I'm wondering if it's older, newer, or just another less common model? The badge says: Model AF-2, serial # 8T27K1. It's bigger and deeper than the "regular" AR & AF timers. Also has a padlock hasp closure rather than the twist-screw. Also interesting is the "TAKE COVER" button, and no "CANCEL" button.

If anyone has any info, including any ideas about what goes in the larger hole above the row of control buttons, I'd appreciate any details. I'm planning to install buttons and use it as a remote control for the other AR timer when I finally figure out where I want to install it.

Thanks, Charles

Eric Green has a little information about these older timers on his website. As far as that big hole goes, it looks to be the pilot/operation light. (Old Dallas, TX system)

That's the older AF timer model. I guess it's probably the original design.
I've never seen another AR or AF type. As far at installing buttons goes,
the buttons, relays etc. all mount on an assembly that goes inside the timer
box.

I saw that box on ebay but didn't bid because it didn't have the stuff inside.
I might have a partial non-working assembly for the inside if you are interested. I'll
have to dig around and look. It'll be an AR instead of an AF but from the
photos it looks like the 3 holes will line up but there won't be any position
for the bottom hole. If you are interested PM me and I'll try to find the thing.

Thanks for the link to the CD museum timer page... I hadn't visited that site in awhile, and had forgotten that they had any materials on the timers.

Too bad that the buttons were mounted on a subchassis, but I think I can still mount new buttons on the door. It won't be 100% original, but I won't drill or damage the case in doing that. I'll keep an eye out for another early timer maybe rusty or in bad shape, so I can make a good one with this housing.

Ive seen that before. A couple of years back during Severe Weather Week the news showed a small Kansas Town using one of those (It didnt have a Fire button) to activate their sirens with.
