A new old siren...

Thu Aug 16, 2007 3:11 am

Wow! I was just driving along one day and in the far distance I see something odd and thought maybe, just maybe it was a siren. Didn't think so since I THOUGHT I knew where all the sirens in my town were...what a surprise when I found this old sucker!
Turns out that not only does Spearfish have something OTHER than 2001 and Model 5's... it even works!
It only goes off when there is an actual fire or tornado so its going to be next to impossible to get a vid of, but I will try. Anyone know what kind of siren this is? I'm guessing in the vicinity of a carters?.....

I almost want to say it's some kind of Federal dual-head siren like a Federal Lion or something. I've seen several of these in person in various towns in north central Indiana.

I think it's a Sterling M10 because it is too long to be a Lion, and, as far as I know, Carters sirens were never made or exported to the US. They were made, and kept, in England.
If your siren is a-failin'
Chances are that it's a Whelen
And if it's just about to die
Then it must be an ATI

It's not an M-10 for sure. I actually have no idea what it's not an M-10 at all. The shroud that covers the ports on an M-10 doesn't reach over to the intake horns like this one.

Interesting, sharp photos. Thank you. Why do you call that Thunderbolt "the Chinese siren"?
In another photo, rather than erect a second pole, I would think they would place the street light on the siren pole.

I'm guessing a super rare B&M siren.

JkVernon is right, it is a Federal Fire Siren (AKA Federal Lion). The dual set of ports gives it away as well as the design. It looks big in that picture, but if you look at it for a little while... you can see it isn't big enough to be an M-10. Definitly a Federal Fire Siren though!
