What will happen to the TMI sirens?

Thu Jun 01, 2017 1:17 am

For anyone that doesn't know already, Three Mile Island power plant is now indefinitely set to be decommissioned in 2019. So if it does shut down, what do you think will happen to the sirens? They currently have 97 T-128's (one on the plant grounds) and 3 2903's also on plant grounds.

Wow and they installed a new fleet of T-128's not too long ago. What a waste.

As if that isn't bad enough, the old system was working perfectly. Double waste.
Sure will be weird seeing sirens only a few years old rusting away doing nothing. I hope they can be reused.
I have an unhealthy obsession with mini sirens.

Surely they will sell them off to other municipalities to try to recoop some money.

Yeah, that's my best guess is that they'll maybe distribute them to other places that could use them as tornado sirens. (outside of PA)

If i'm right (and correct me if i'm not) the only reason the old sirens were replaced is because they didn't have battery backup and they wanted more reliable sirens.

I beleive you are correct Luke. The old ACA system was well maintained and in good operating order.

Some of the ACA sirens were replaced with 2001s at one point, so it was an even bigger waste to replace those 2001s with T-128s. It will be interesting to see what actually happens with the T-128s.
Resident of a county with big a mixture of sirens, but in the process of being replaced. :(

I doubt any of us know since this is a nuclear power plant and they probably have them tucked safely away in a warehouse or something like that.
