Whelen 2000-R

Thu Sep 29, 2016 3:39 pm

Hey guys, I was recently running through the Mystery Sirens Thread, and saw this on top of Ida, MI Fire Department.

Can anyone give me examples and any info of this siren? Are any left?

St. Louis used to have a ton of them. I think all are gone.

When did they start getting replaced? I looked back around to a post that's like a decade old and it said they were slowly replacing them with other Whelens.

IIRC, that one in Ida, MI is still in use, from what I understand.

As Brendan said earlier, St. Louis County, MO used to have a bunch of Whelen WPS-2000R's and 3016's, but those were replaced by Whelen WPS 2910's several years back due to the age of the older system as problems were beginning to arise.

The plague of broken worm gears on the 3016s and 2000rs along with broken sound cards and the age of the Federal sirens in the system were the main reasons the officials wanted to scrap the old system and start all over. As far as I can tell St Louis county were the only ones to utilize the 2000R on any sort of large scale system. Those wiser than I may know of aditional systems but they were definitely not Whelens big money maker.

Thanks for the replies guys!

Anyway, I found a video of one in St Louis:

Are there any more videos of 2000Rs? This one doesn't rotate.

Also, what does the /400R mean?

I passed by that one all the time. It was in horrible shape.

This siren has a broken rotator and I reported it to the local emergency management office. Amazingly I could hear Arnold, MO ATI sirens doing Westminster chimes a lil over 4 miles away before the test, as you can hear in the video.
They could have overhauling the hell out of the system, although it wouldn't have been worth the money considering the age and size of that old system.
