Michigan Central Passenger Station Chrysler Siren

Sat Dec 27, 2014 7:16 am

While restoring some vintage railroad images, I came across this Kodachrome slide of a New York Central E-8 locomotive backing into the Michigan Central Passenger Station in Detroit, Michigan. I thought I would share this with the group. On top of the station, you can see a yellow Chrysler Air Raid Siren shot on December 5, 1961. I decided to do an enlargement of the area to bring it in closer.

Gentlemen; your hats and a moment of silence for all five of the great American legacies displayed here, that are no longer with us.

I can't find any information on this one though, does anyone know when it was removed? It seems like one of those whose removal costs would never have panned out to do so. Yet no image I've seen of the building has a hole big enough for it to have fallen through.

Wow, that really is sad to see such a once-beautiful piece of architecture left in ruins like that. I bet it was really something back in its time just by looking at all the detailed work that the architects incorporated into the building. Sadly, that's just the way that many old buildings in modern-day Detroit are though. Really cool video nonetheless, it's neat to see something like that from that kind of perspective.

Reminds me of a beautiful train station in the city of Schenectady. They tore it down for no reason too, now it's just a lot. Very cool nonetheless, gotta love those CD yellow Chryslers.

I just love images like these. Gives you a feel for what it would have been like back in the day and it's just great. Awesome to be able to see one when it was up there.
