Wisconsin State Fair Park P-50 Test *FINALLY RECORDED IT!

Wed Feb 08, 2012 10:11 pm

After having tried and failed 3 times over the last 2 years to record this siren, I finally got a nice recording of it for the noon test today. My waiting paid off, it went off for a minute of alert and another minute of attack! It has some holes in the projector, but it still sounds great.

Enjoy!

Damn, what a beast!

Hearing one of these things in person is definitely on my bucket list.

That deep bass echo on the attack is unheard off, love it!

Lol, Jeb come up to Milwaukee and we'll make it happen :)

I loved the echoes heard here, too. They were coming off the Petit National Ice Center (round building seen to the right of the siren at the end) and sound barrier walls along I-94 (out of view, a couple blocks to the north (right)). At an ambient distance, P-50's do have a much lower & more ominous pitch. I found it really interesting the difference in pitch of the echo that such a short distance could produce. The high tones all but disappeared.

Yes, the projectors on P-50's vibrate a lot when the siren is at full volume. That's why they are sometimes found with holes in the fiberglass, as is the case with this one.

That and these P-50's in Milwaukee have been up since the Mid to late 80's

The last wind-down sounds like a synthesizer lol.
