What happened to the Fernald Plant sirens?

Mon Mar 26, 2018 4:43 am

I know that Fernald had installed the EOWS sirens around 1986 or 1987, but after the closure of the plant, what happened to the sirens?

If I remember right I believe they removed some and others they quietly cut the power to and that was it. I’m not sure what happened to the site other than it was a radioactive waste site and the EPA and other agencies like the NRC were cleaning it up. It might have been cleared as suitable land to build on but if not it’s probably just a restricted area closed off because of the toxic waste on the site. But don’t quote me on that; I might be thinking of somewhere else.

They were all tied into Hamilton County's system once the Fernald plant no longer needed them. Some of them might still be standing, but none of them have been active since Hamilton County installed new T-128s all around the county in early 2012.

EDIT: I just checked recent Bird's Eye images of properites on the county auditor's website, and it looks like the only 1212 still standing within Hamilton County is the one next to Crosby Elementary School. I believe the 1212 in Shandon (Butler County) still stands, while all other 1212s and the 612 next to the old plant site have been removed.

Figured. I wonder if West Shore Services took them, it would seem rather likely.

Werden Electric removed the three Ross Township locations in 2009 when they installed 3 new T-128s purchased by the township at the time. As for the rest of them, Werden could have removed some and/or ANS Services may have removed some. As far as I know, West Shore Services has never done siren work down here.

A few counties down here in northern Kentucky use West Shore as their vendor, but no, they did not do work on the Fernald 1212's. Any that were removed in Butler would have been Werden and any removed in Hamilton County would have been ANS and therefore scrapped. The only two standing sirens are Shandon and Crosby Elementary. Both are inactive.

In the case with the power plant that was in my state, they stored their removed sirens (Whelen 3016s) in one of their warehouses at the plant site. They tried selling them, but only a few were sold. About 200 of them are still in storage, along with several Allertors that were in place prior to the plant's warning system update in July 1981.

Some of them are still up in place. Either they are owned by the city, or the contractors that were hired to remove them in 1999 missed them.

I looked at the Crosby 1212 on StreetView and it's got an ASC radio. Is it apart of the county system?

It was part of the system until it was either disconnected or quit working, along with all other old Fernald sirens.
