Is it worth asking my city for this?

Thu Mar 22, 2018 5:14 pm

As I am becoming more interested in sirens and mass notification in general, I am looking to acquire one of those small sirens, just something to mess around with, etc.

In my city we have a park that was formerly a Girl Scout camp that was sold to the Village around 2012 or so after its final closure in 2010. They officially opened it to the public a couple of years ago and now it is under the Joint Recreation Board's jurisdiction. There are many old buildings on the park that were part of the camp that are falling apart because they are old and not safe. One of these buildings, the boat house, has a siren on it which I can only assume was used as an alarm of some sort. It too appears to be rather old. Power is cut to all the buildings in the park besides one of the newer buildings which is used as an event hall and in the process of being refurbished; all the others will likely be torn down. They have an old siren; a Faraday re-branded Federal Model D? (or Model A?) siren. It appears to be rusting on the outside but the inside looks to be in better condition. My question is if I asked the Joint Recreation Board if I can remove it and acquire it, and if I did acquire it, would it be manageable to get it back into working order as to where I can actually use it? It looks too bad to the point it could be used in it's current state. Attached are some pictures of it.
If it's not worth it I wouldn't bother, but it still looks like a cool piece to have. Thanks.

That's a Faraday A copy. If it were up to me, I would go there with some tools and a ladder and remove it. But if you want to be legal, I would ask your municipality about it.

Yeah, they have had vandalism problems with people destroying stuff and the police do frequent checks and I believe some form of video surveillance was installed, so I’m gonna go the legal route. I don’t want to be arrested over something they probably wouldn’t mind me having.

Yeah, go ahead. I mean, it's obviously not being used, anyway.
