Whelen controller question

Mon Mar 19, 2018 1:55 pm

Question for y'all.

I know that the WPS-4000 series controllers have the capability to host up to 8 drivers (4003, 4004, 4008). However, some municipalities use the same controllers (2030 more nowadays) on their 3016s. Also, people use 2030s on their 28/2910s. How do they manage this if they only use 8 drivers? Is there a special controller for the 2X10s? Do the 3016s use 2 controllers? I honestly have no idea.

Does anyone anyone about this? :?:

Whelen's 400W amplifiers can support 4-100W channels.

I haven't the faintest idea what you are asking. The best response I can come up with--that I think answers your question--is that Whelen cabinets can have anywhere from 1 to 10 amplifiers, so only the number of amplifiers needed for the particular siren is included (ex. a 3016 would use 4-400W amplifiers for 1600W of amplification; a 2908 would use 8-400W amps, a 4003 would use 3-400W amps, etc.)

What I was trying to ask is how a controller that can support up to 8 drivers can power the 16 drivers in a 3016, or the 10 drivers in a 28/2910. I know that FS MOD8032B sirens can run on 2 tone generators for the tone to play on all drivers, so I wondering if they did the same thing with 3016s. I haven't seen a 3016 with a newer cabinet (or at all, for that matter), so I didn't know if that was the case.

I found out the 8032 two control thing in a BTS video from Burnoie, Noie said something about a Monroe County mod not having 2 boxes.

I think you're assuming Whelen boxes and Federal boxes work the same. They don't.

Federal UV controllers only support up to 8-400W amps (the MCP, for that matter, only supported 6-400W amps). That's why Mod 6048s needed two boxes wired together for 4800W of audio output. But no 8032B will need two boxes since the UV supports 3200W of audio output. I've noticed some of 2810s that got upgraded with UV boxes in Monroe County, MI only have one box, which means 2 drivers were left disconnected.

Like I said before, Whelen's boxes support up to 10-400W drivers so its a nonissue.

the 3000 series used 16 100 watt drivers in the 3016. 4 drivers per 400 watt channel.

I'm sorry. Wayne County did. My error. Go look up footage of their UV controlled 2810s. You'll note only one box.

Remember that the 3016 uses 16 100W drivers. That's a total of 1600W. The 4004/Vortex R4 on the other hand uses 4 400W drivers for a total of 1600W. The newer controllers allow you to use 1 400W driver or 4 100W drivers. It all adds up and everything works perfectly.
My knowledge excels on the Federal Thunderbolt siren and SiraTone EOWS sirens. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I see. Thanks for the input. Even more info to add to my Whelen knowledge.
