University of Minnesota siren system

Mon Mar 12, 2018 3:48 am

(Edited the pictures to make them look smoother)

Today I was pretty bored so I hopped on Google Earth to snoop around the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus to see what other sirens I could locate. As a Minneapolis resident I could’ve driven around there and took pictures in person but I’m too lazy.

First off we’ll start with the most famous siren on campus/around Minnesota and recognized by many board members.

4/5 PORT THUNDERBOLT 1000T

This is the only surviving 4/5 port Thunderbolt in the Minneapolis system.

Here is a recording by me, but many others are up on YouTube. https://youtu.be/IJLm4nxXnoE

WHELEN VORTEX R4

This replaced a 4/5 port Thunderbolt, as you can see it is a low mounted siren. It is on top of the university fire department and next to the TCF Bank Stadium. Here is a recording of the Thunderbolt https://youtu.be/ZdQKgH6HECo (by garyhstorms10).

FEDERAL SIGNAL MODULATOR 5020

This is located at Jane Sage Cowles stadium. Big thanks to 4J25 for telling me where it was located!

FEDERAL SIGNAL DSA

These DSA’s are located directly across the 4/5 port Thunderbolt on top of the Rarig Center and are used for campus wide alerts, not including severe weather. First picture shows the one on the right of the building, the one on the left, and a distance picture. The final picture shows the other DSA’s on the same building but on the other side.

I also have a video of these ones going off! They have a very unique tone. This is the far left one. https://youtu.be/7CNQ_MYY3Ak (Starts at 0:00 beware).

FEDERAL SIGNAL DSA

These are located on top of Frontier Hall.

FEDERAL SIGNAL DSA

These two are located on top of the Coffman Memorial Union.

FEDERAL SIGNAL DSA

These are located on top of the Elmer L Andersen Library.

FEDERAL SIGNAL DSA

These are located on top of the University Recreation and Wellness Center.

If I find anymore DSA’s on the campus I will update this page.

I know this isnt relevant at all but can we just talk about the fact that your phone battery went from 67% to 1%

Haha! True on the phone battery thing! But seriously though that 4/5 thunderbolt is still by far the smoothest dual tone thunderbolt I’ve ever heard. (4/5 bolts are usually smooth tho...)
Own and love a Thunderbolt 1000 and a Model 5.

I have many hobbies and interests. And I love them all.

I took some screenshots in the morning and for some reason my battery can stay at 1% for like an hour.

I believe the Modulator you're looking for is located at Jane Sage Cowles stadium on a lighting mast. It's a MOD-5020.

Thank you very much!! Popped the name in Google Earth and found it in less than a minute! Will be adding it to the list shortly.
