2017 West Texas Sirens Update

Thu Dec 07, 2017 10:21 pm

For those that use Google Earth/Pro, I have the 2017 update of the systems I can about in West Texas. If you are interested, PM me with your email address. File is in KMZ format.

Some updates include:
-Dumas has uninstalled a few sirens and replaced with T-128's. These were not 1-for-1 replacements. Total now 14.
-Canadian removed all sirens and replaced with T-128's.
-Sunray removed all sirens and replaced with T-128's.
-Jayton installed a 2001-130 on their courthouse.
-Floydada removed some sirens. The system is no longer active. All sirens 3-ph.
-All sirens in Snyder have been removed and scrapped.
-I have finally located the final siren in Levelland. It only took 9 years to find it.
-Littlefield decommissioned their siren system and then immediately reinstated a new system of 508's. Only one location has been confirmed. Imagery does not reflect new locations yet. Will investigate this month or January when I am out there next.
-I have located several more Motorola sirens in various towns. These may have come from Hereford's original system.
-Hereford has added a Model 2 to their system as an apparent augmentation.
-It's unclear, but Silverton may have a Sentry 14V. I saw its shadow at night. I believe they have relocated their M-10 as well.
-A couple years ago Graham removed some of their old sirens, upgraded all T-112's to -121's, and replaced old units with T-128s.

What does a Motorola siren look like? Can't remember what they look like, exactly...

There isn't a lot we know about them, and if weren't for KDKsiren, we probably wouldn't even know what they were in the first place. These are 300W sirens and from the 1960s/early 1970s. They are not very loud at all, but do run off of batteries, and were probably the first ever attempt at voice broadcast and battery backup. From what I understand, Hereford, TX had about 30 of these units. They were apparently very buggy and would go off for no reason at all. KDK seems to remember them making a "YEOW-like" tone with the pitch starting high, and rapidly dropping to low. I can only assume that the towns that have these got them from Hereford when they were later replaced with ACA Cyclones.
