Anyone know what siren this is?

Sat Jun 17, 2017 10:12 am

I've just gotten 'into' old sirens a few months ago, at age 57. I bought my first one off Ebay a few weeks ago, which was simply advertised as a Federal air-raid siren, with no housing and no ID tag on the motor. I took a gamble as to it being single-phase by the 2 heavy wires on the motor, in addition to the 4 smaller ones.
Now that I have it, I can see that it is a capacitor-start induction motor. The 2 heavy wires (#6 or so) are the run winding, and the two sets of 2 smaller wires (#14 or so) seem to be each of the two start windings, which I find a bit unusual. One small wire from each group was pre-connected to each the heavy wires, leaving 2 small wires loose. So far, I've applied 120 volts to the motor, with a 500 uF capacitor in the start winding circuit (2 loose small wires), and gave her a few good growls, everything looks good with the motor, which I imagine is designed for 230 volts.
But I would like to find out what the proper capacitors, potential relay, etc are for this unit. Most of what I found online shows Federal using repulsion start, or series wound brush motors for their old single-phase sirens, rather than capacitor-start. Perhaps this is not a Federal? The rotor and stator sure look like the Model 5/7's I've seen, but I haven't seen any with this style of motor. Any ideas?
This is my first time posting on the Siren Board, so if I'm doing something wrong here, I apologize in advance! (I accidentally clicked the "img" button, and it now says "img is on", whatever that means!!)

I believe you have a Federal model 3 siren. It is for sure a Federal siren, and the reason I believe you have a model 3 is due to the shorter motor. If you look up pictures of the chopper/motor assemblies of Federal model 5/7's they have a longer motor, where the model 3 has a shorter motor. Thus I believe you have the guts of a Federal Model 3, Good Find!

I should add that in the pictures, it looks a bit shorter and fatter than it really is. It is 24" tall overall, the outside diameter of the siren stator is 22", and the chopper is about 18" diameter.

I too believe it to be a Model 3. I would be able to confirm if I saw the housing (if it has housing).

Well it's either a C3 1/2 or an early model 5

Actually I think that's a HOR Siro-Drone. I had no idea they used capacitor start/run single phase motors either.

It appears to me to either be a model 5/7 or a model 3.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I'm still learning how to use this site. It sure looks like an FS 5/7 to me, with the exception of the capacitor-start motor, which appears to be the original. This one has the 18" rotor like the 5/7's, I've read that the model 3's only have a 14" rotor. I growl her a few times a week on 120 volts, still haven't let 'er rip full bore! I'll have to rig up a switch to manually disconnect the start winding as it comes to speed, until I can find the proper components.

Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately this guy came naked, no housing. From what I've read so far, the model 3 has a 14" rotor, while this one is 18" like a 5/7. And all of the Model X single-phase Federals seem to use a brush motor of some sort, this one is capacitor start, possibly capacitor run also.

Thanks for the reply! After reading your post, I've looked at a bunch of Siro-Drones. Indeed, some have very similar looking motors, not exact, but the closest I've found so far. But the rotor / stator on this one looks closer to the FS 5/7 than the H.O.R.'s ??
