Two Questions: What is this siren? Controllers?

Wed Mar 15, 2017 6:08 pm

First post for me, looking for some info on what we have for a siren. It serves our little town of 300 as a Storm Siren, Fire Siren, and Noon Whistle. It works fine but our local telecommunication company just abandoned all of their copper service here in town and that was how we activated the Storm/Fire cycles from the fire station(it is a block away from the station). This leads me to trying to find out exactly what it is and what we may have for options to restore our "remote" activation of it. There is a Federal Signal Z220 control in the building the siren is next to that houses all of the electrical control for it. The siren is 3 phase. No one here seems to know a thing about it, even when it may have been installed. I've got a couple pictures and a video of it running I'll try and post here, it was already wound up before I could get my phone to take video of it so there's not a whole lot to hear.

Sounds fairly healthy. I second this - where are you in Iowa?

I'm in Marble Rock, IA. As far as I know it is still in great shape, I've lived here my whole life and it has never given a problem that I can remember. Any ideas on how old it may be? The little bit I've been able to find on Federal Model B's suggests pre WW2 and possibly a little bit earlier than that?

There were 3 generations of Type B. I

The first one started production in 1918 and looked like this: https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/62/192829 ... d30a_b.jpg

In 1922, a new design was used, using flared projectors with the same motor cover: https://c1.staticflickr.com/6/5471/1211 ... dd3e_b.jpg

The third generation was made in 1926 and up. It had two stator rows for each chopper, smaller chopper covers and more tubular air intakes. https://i.ytimg.com/vi/b8GNJg_l03U/hqdefault.jpg

Thanks for that info. I'm thinking it may be the earliest model going by the images you shared. I know my picture isn't the best but it definitely doesn't have the shrouds that those two later versions show.
