My New W.S. Darley Champion Siren

Sun Feb 12, 2017 9:41 pm

I just got a 1920s W.S. Darley Champion siren from an old firehouse in Clintondale NY. It even came with a newspaper article with a photo of the siren mounted in the cupola in 1926!

It spins freely, it needs to be rewired so it's untested.

Wow, nice! I don't know if anyone else owns one of these yet. I didn't know they were only 1.5HP. I'd guess it'd be on about the same level as the Little Giant. Can you make out the "Type" on the ID plate? To me it looks like 4 A 3/4 U. Not sure what that means.

You got this from Clintondale, NY? As in, the same Clintondale that's on my Ulster County map (the link is in my signature)? That's very interesting, because I had no idea it existed. Was it just taken off the old firehouse, or had it been in storage for many years? I actually don't know if the old firehouse is still standing. The new one has a Model 5.

I can't really make out the ID plate too well either. I'm not exactly sure when it was taken out of the cupola - Probably when the old firehouse was taken down. Yep, Same Clintondale NY. They person I bought it from lived just down the road from the firehouse. He had it for a few years and the guy before him had it for a couple of years. He said if he finds the broken piece of the bell he'll send it to me. I saw that model 5 when I was there. I told him if that one comes down to give me a call!! lol
