Altec Lancing Giant Voice Warning System Information

Tue May 20, 2014 1:05 am

Hello to all!

I have add some pictures of the old original 1960's Altec Giant Voice Warning System. Huntsville Alabama once had this system installed around 1965 and removed in the early 1990's. Salina Kansas also had this system too. Most of the system has been removed in Salina Kansas, but if you go to Google Map there is still one located at a school on Norton Street. I have attached the picture of the old multi-cell horns. Redstone Arsenal still has their old system but the original Multi-cell Horns have been replaced with smaller round looking speakers, several years ago.

I have a 1965 Altec Giant Voice Warning System catalog that I will scan next weekend and post.

Enjoy,
Allen

One of the Altecs on Redstone Arsenal still has it's original horns.

Hi,

Those Altec Square looking horns, in the picture you posted, replaced the original Multi-cell horns in the late 1980's. I use to go to work with my Dad back in the late 1970's and through the mid 1980's and all of the horns were Multi-cells horns with 2 drivers each. The Square looking horns have been slowly replaced with smaller round speakers over the past few years.

I attached a picture of what the original Multi-cell Horns once would have looked like at Redstone Arsenal and in the city of Huntsville Alabama. I hope this information helps

Allen :)

Here is a 1963 Altec Lansing Giant Voice Warning System Information Booklet. On page 5 it lists George C. Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville Alabama (Redstone Arsenal). :)

The NOAA weather radio (model BC-WA) in the first picture, sitting on top of the Contel weather wire receiver, is still in use in our Emergency Ops Center to this day. I recognize the switches on it.

The companion to the Altec console was the tone encoder used to sound the model 2's using Motorola's older signaling format which was in use in the 60s and 70s. It was the same type sounds heard on the tv show Emergency!

Image

The tones for individual sirens would have sounded like these being sent in this clip from Emergency! To sound all sirens, one long tone was sent. What made these tones different from current tones are that they were 2+2 vs. 1+1 format. In other words, there were 2 frequencies mixed into each booop you hear vs. only one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-JpfXqPzzM

In other news, the crew is here to begin installing our 5 model 20V2T sirens.

Glad to hear that the 20v2Ts are being put up! I'll have to see if I can go and see the one in Hampton Cove get installed. What time is it going to get put up?

Sometime tomorrow. I would guess more toward after lunch if they start north and work their way south? (I edited post above with info on old tone encoder).
