Mystery siren in Nebraska

Thu Aug 16, 2012 2:39 am

I have seen this siren mentioned before, but I cannot remember what this is. It was orginally located in the town of Sutherland, NE, until it was replaced by a 2001. It was then apparently relocated to the ethanol plant East of town. It wasn't easy getting a clear shot, since the plant is now closed down and the entrance gates are locked. This is the best one I could get.

Can anyone recognize it?

That's a Soundmaster 125. Basically a copied Super banshee with horns

I doubt it ever sounds, especially being at a closed down ethanol plant.

It goes on and off line depending on the demand for ethanol. My dad told me it was going full steam earlier this spring. I already asked him to keep an eye on it, and to let me know when it's back up and running. With any luck maybe I can get them to sound it off for my dad to record if it does indeed still work.

Did the horns originally rotate in unison?

Well, a 125 it ain't anymore now that the horns are facing away from one-another.

A SoundMaster 125, nice find! It's great to see there are more of these sirens around. To answer the question above, yes, when the siren is functioning properly, the horns face the same direction and sit one on top of the other, then the unit rotates. Unfortunately, it seems this particular model is prone to easy malfunction and the rotating parts are the first to fail (so the horns are turned to give it some omni-directional ability). It would be great to get a recording of one. There are two near my hometown, yet they have never once sounded on schedule and they seem to break down annually.
