Buffalo, NY Area Sirens

Sat Jul 30, 2011 5:48 am

Here are a couple questions I have about Buffalo, NY:

1. Does Buffalo have siren system?

2. If Buffalo did or does have sirens, what models where they?

3. Did the city have a Civil Defense system?

I've been curious to what Buffalo had because one time I passed some building on a trip and saw what looked like a HOR omni-directional mounted behind a build-board at a corner. Even if there is info about any surrounding communities is appreciated as well.

Right now, I've been looking with Google Streetview, and had no luck finding anything.

I know the city of Buffalo doesn't have a siren system, but many of the suburbs do for volunteer fire departments.

Here's the sirens I know about:

West Seneca:
1 Fedelcode Model 5
4 Model 2s
2 STL-10s

Clarence:
1 2001
1 Whelen WPS-2702 I believe

Springville:
1 Model 2

Somewhere along Transit Rd. in Lancaster, there are these 4 red horns. I believe Lancaster also has some sirens since I have been there and heard sirens sound. I believe I have seen an STH-10 somewhere there.
Resident of a county with big a mixture of sirens, but in the process of being replaced. :(

This is the only siren I know of in Buffalo: http://maps.google.ca/maps?q=sloan+NY&h ... 3,,0,-7.47

It looks like its in the village of Sloan but I called them and they confirmed it was a Buffalo Siren.

West Seneca also has one just like that. They must've been a part of Erie County's Civil Defense siren system many years ago. My grandparents live very close the one in West Seneca, and when I'm at their house, I can only hear the nearby Model 5 at the fire station sounding for noon whistles and fire calls. I'm guessing another yellow Model 2 and both STL-10s in West Seneca were also in Erie County's Civil Defense siren system.

I think your right about the Erie Civil Defense system. They are all similar and all the control boxes are basically the same. The Model 5 I think is the only one which is not civil defense, unless they took it over after. There are probably other sirens in Buffalo but you have to look for them.

That Model 5 is painted red, so I would say it was most likely always a fire siren.
