Turkey Point Nuclear Siren Test Whelen WPS-4004 Homestead, FL

Thu Jul 05, 2018 5:12 pm

I decided to record yet another Turkey Point siren last March. The siren broadcasted quiet and distorted voice messages like other sirens I have recorded. There definitely seems to be an issue with the voice massages received by the siren’s radio. The siren also sounds the usual two short alerts halfway thru the test and, at the end of the test.

Sounds like a problem with the live voice and not the siren itself (certainly not the radio since its receiving commands just fine).

Yes, the siren's radio is receiving distorted voice messages. The fault is the distorted voice messages, not the siren’s radio receiver. The fault could either be in the encoder or in the journey from the transmitter to the siren.

Its most likely a poor mic set-up in their control room. Live voice = bad for this very reason.

That is also a likely cause of the distortion.
