Fedelcode Up And Running

Sat Mar 17, 2018 11:46 pm

First test run on the Fedelco with the dampener in operation. Still needs some work, new return spring, fine tuning and paint. Enjoy.

That's really awesome! Good job fixing it, hopefully you can find a new and stronger spring.

You have just made history. This is the first time (at least to me) where I got to see the internals of a Fedelcode coded siren in action!! I hope the spring gets repaired, and I cannot wait for the first test!! What horsepower is this unit?

My Dad was the Assistant Fire Chief at the Base when it was active. From the first time I heard that siren go off and then to watch the code wheel controller in the Alarm Office in action I was hooked. That was 52 years ago. For me it was a great thing to see and hear. The motor is 5 hp 3 phase the code motor is also 3 phase I do know that it is a slow speed motor but has a lot of torque to it. The spring replacement was anticipated and will be a easy fix once I figure out the correct tension and length. Stay tuned more to come.

If the siren is 5HP, then it would be a Fedelcode Model 5. Thank you again for sharing!!

Wow, I had no idea the damper wheel actually spun with the siren rotor!

Yes it runs on a pretty good sized bearing almost as heavy duty as a car wheel bearing. Back when they built things to last and that were re-build-able. An era long gone.

How many amps is it rated for? Federal had a weird thing where they would under-rate the motor HP. I guess it was to make the sirens look less power hungry. If it's a Model 5/7 it'll have either a 7.5 or 10 HP motor.
