UK Castle Castings Siren in Alaska

Sat Apr 09, 2016 7:40 pm

So I came across this video of someone from Alaska who I think bought a Castle Castings siren from the UK and ran it on a 3-phase converter if I'm not mistaken. Crazy thing is though that it sounds like it runs on 50hz, though the Mains Frequency is 60hz in America.
Maybe this disspells the idea that sirens run at different RPMs depending on the 50-60Hz level from country to country?
At the same time he could be running it on a separate 3 phase generator like atticboy11 did with his Castle Castings at the Severn Valley Railway in England.

What are your thoughts guys?

I just realised as well this is similar to that CLM siren in Dashwood, Canada that also sounds like it's running on 50Hz

Alaska is kinda out there. So it's no surprise they have a U.K. siren over there.

Suppose so.
Still it's amazing what parts of the world UK sirens end up!

A number of British sirens ended up as fire sirens in Chile, which runs on a 50 Hz. system.

Oh cool. There was a number of them used by fire stations in New Zealand too, as well as the North and the Republic of Ireland. Some of the fire stations in the North have WW2 Gents sirens that are still in situ.

I'm wondering then if Alaska's Hz system is 50 Hz like in Chile and other parts of South America.

No, Alaska runs on 60Hz like the rest of the US and Hawaii. (Fairly sure Puerto Rico and Guam, and all our other protectorates do too.)

60Hz? Talking about sirens or something else?

Talking about the frequency of the electrical system, not the siren's pitch.

The only places in the Americas where 50 Hz. is used is in the southern countries of South America: Chile, Argentina, parts of Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, and a few other places in or near the Caribbean. Of American possessions, I believe that American Samoa might use it.
