Yes, they were, they were 9/12 port. They are super uncommon, but they do exist. I am lucky to live 10 minutes away from one. Only the normal 12 port 2001s used the model 3 rotor design, the Equinox variant uses an Eclipse-8 rotor.

They are positive displacement blowers. They move the air a certain way (IIRC) which is why a centrifugal based blower (like say... A leaf blower?) of the same specs makes such a cruddy blower. Yup. Instead of using an impeller like most conventional blowers, the thunderbolt "roots style"...
