Re: I finally got my hands on a Thunderbolt!!

The rotator motor on that is going to be an old 3 phase one. They’re 1/3 hp. The blower motor is a 7.5hp 3 phase motor. Chopper motor is a universal motor and operates anywhere between 120-240v single phase AC/DC.

Re: I found a Federal Signal Model 3T!

The control box tags on Federal sirens don’t have the siren model number stamped on them. This siren would be equipped with an RC5WA motor starter or an ARCH Siratrol unit for remote control. The only way to tell this siren’s model number is to look at the tag on the siren housing itself, which isn’...

Re: Severe lack of siren coverage in the Washington DC area.

The Washington DC Metropolitan area once had a 500+ strong system of Thunderbolts and Allertors. 200 of them were Allertors, so it can be assumed that there were around 250-300 Thunderbolts in addition to that number. It was and still holds the title for the largest siren warning system in the world...

Re: Post your Mystery Sirens here.

That appears to be a 3 or 5hp Siro-Drone.

Re: 500 power requirement info.

The 9/12 dual tone and 5 or 8 port single tone models used a 10hp 3 phase 9-lead motor or a 10hp single phase repulsion-induction motor. The 3 phase motor drew 28 amps at 240v and 14 amps at 480v. The single phase motor drew 56 amps depending on the brush angle. The 10/12 500 is a bit of a mystery, ...

Re: Looking for info about a FS Model 5

That looks like a late 1940's siren, not really any way to tell the exact date unfortunately.

Re: Jasper County, MO Sirens

Joplin used to have a system of older Allertors from the late 1960's. In the 80's they added Thunderbeams, and at some point in the 90's a T-135-AC (P-50) They also ended up with some Vortexes and 2001's before the 2011 tornado. After the tornado they overhauled the entire system and it's all 2001-1...

Re: Ethersville, IA

This is nothing special. It’s just the shadow and quality of the satellite image that make it appear that way. It’s likely nothing more than your average late 1970’s Series A2 Thunderbolt.

Re: ACA Rotor removal

The first thing you'll want to do is remove the locknut on the front of the shaft that holds the rotor in place. The second thing I would recommend is soaking the shaft and hub in PB blaster for a day or so. Once you've let it soak, heat the hub on the rotor up with a torch, and start trying to pull...

Re: Info requested

We have re-acquired our first and only electric siren. We are looking for any information about the unit. It was loaned to another community in the 80s. Want to restore and display. That does appear to be a Sterling K-2 as previously mentioned. Let me know where you are located, we offer complete s...
