That's how I thought the motor would've been braked. Some of the local fire departments near me had Cyclones with this feature.

I read somewhere that the motor itself freezes up to create the pulse signal. Is this true?

Canadian CLM sirens are pretty ugly. They look like big ol' steel flashlights with the back end being the handle. Omnidirectional EOWS sirens are also plain looking

UPDATE 8/3/2018 According to the Civil Defense Matching Funds List, Auburn, Lewiston, and Augusta may have had Thunderbolt units installed. If not, Allertors would've been in place.
In addition, Portland had 10 SD-10/2T22 units installed.
